Throughout the Civil War, contractors produced most infantry accoutrements, including cartridge boxes. Three firms supplied particularly large quantities: H. A. Dingee and C. S. Storms of New York, and E. Gaylord of Chicopee, Massachusetts. My reproductions reflect the subtle variations and contractor stamps associated with each maker. I also offer a Moores & Co. example, based on an original in our collection. This contractor held both state and federal contracts, and its boxes feature several small but distinctive details on the rear.
The Dingee, Storms, and Gaylord versions are appropriate for most Federal impressions. The Moores version is better suited to Western Federal impressions, as states such as Indiana and Ohio contracted with the company, and some sets were also supplied to the Allegheny Arsenal.
