Federal Issue Haversack
We are reproducing the issue haversack based on two examples. One is copied
from an example in Connecticut. It is made from cotton drill, has the proper
size buckle and comes with an inner bag with hand sewn buttonholes. Second
example is copied from an original in Ohio and was very similar in
construction. Leather was attached by hand sewing rather than the rivets on
the Connecticut example. Connecticut example will be made unless you specify
the Ohio.
Special Note:
While the Quartermaster Manual specifies a sling carrying strap length of 40
to 45 inches, most surviving original Federal haversacks have straps closer
to 40 inches. Our reproductions typically measure 45 to 48 inches, which is
slightly longer than both the originals and the manual's specifications.
This extra length may enhance comfort and versatility for modern reenactors,
accommodating different body types and wear preferences. Original examples
are often shorter possibly due to material conservation.
If you require a strap longer or shorter than our standard length, please
email us at the time of your order with your preferred measurement, and we
will accommodate your request.
