Copied off of an original in the Museum of the Confederacy identified to Sgt A. H. Bayley, Co D. (Peyton’s Artillery) 18th Virginia Artillery Battalion. The haversack is made from two layers of fabric. The outer layer is cotton duck painted with a period tarring, the inner layer is made from cotton drill. The bag is assembled with a mixture of hand and machine sewing as per the original. The bag itself and the buttonhole are sewn by hand, but the sling is machine sewn. The bag is closed with a japanned tin button. That bag is 11" x 12" in size.

The straps on our haversacks are typically in the 45” range which is consistent with or a little longer than specified in the Ordinance manuals. Originals are often shorter than 40-45". If you need a longer strap, please email me when ordering.
